“Last December, we were driving along and we were listening to Christmas music, and then an Elvis Presley Christmas song came on,” Vanessa shared on Live with Kelly and Ryan in 2019. “He had just dyed his hair dark. He’s a natural blonde, blonde and I was looking at him and he was singing along and I was like, ‘Babe, you need to play Elvis.'”
She continued, “Then in January, he was sitting at the piano. And he’s playing and he’s singing and I’m like, ‘I don’t know how, but you need to figure out how you can play Elvis. Like, I don’t know how we get rights or what we do, but you need to play him.'”
Since their breakup, Vanessa hasn’t spoken out on Austin’s now Golden Globe-winning performance as Elvis, though she did take a moment to acknowledge a post that poked fun at his Elvis-like accent that has mesmerized and puzzled fans alike.
As she simply commented, “Crying.”
Source link On Monday, actor Austin Butler publicly thanked his ex-girlfriend, Vanessa Hudgens, for inspiring him to take on the iconic role of Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming biopic about the legendary singer.
The post, shared on Instagram, featured a snap of the duo from the 2019 Oscars after-party, alongside a heartfelt caption recognizing the High School Musical star for her role in jump-starting his acting career.
“Vanessa has been such a decisive voice in my career and has always been there to hold my hand through the best and worst times,” he wrote. “She was an essential part of finding the confidence to take on this role of a lifetime… thank you babe.”
Hudgens already threw her support behind Butler’s casting choice, revealing last month that the actor “literally worked his butt off to make this dream a reality.”
The former couple, who dated for nearly a decade, has remained in each other’s lives and on good terms since splitting in 2011, with Hudgens referring to Butler as one of her “best friends” in an 2015 interview with Seventeen.
The upcoming feature releases in the spring of 2021 and will follow Elvis Presley’s rise to fame and his meteoric fall. This will be Butler’s biggest role to date and the actor is sure to deliver a pitch-perfect performance as the King of Rock N’ Roll. And it seems his ex-girlfriend provided the inspiration he needed to take on such an iconic character.
