Source link Recently, new ground-breaking news in the field of Astronomy has been revealed. ScienceDaily published a unique article about a breakthrough in the discovery of extrasolar planets, also known as exoplanets.
Exoplanets are planets which orbit stars outside of our Solar System. Typically, these planets are difficult to detect because they are incredibly small and their faint light gets buried among the light from their star. To facilitate their detection, astronomers use innovative techniques such as the Transit Method and Radial Velocity Method.
The Transit Method involves taking light readings of a star over a period of time and detecting variations in the brightness of the star. Such variations can indicate that something is blocking the light from coming to us, which is a tell-tale sign of an exoplanet’s presence.
On the other hand, the Radial Velocity Method looks for slight movements in the star under study. When an orbiting planet forms its own gravitational pull, the star is dragged slightly due to the planet’s force of gravity. By studying this “drag”, scientists can conclude that there is indeed some unseen object that is tugging on the star.
Using the combined power of these two methods, a large scale survey is underway to find extrasolar planets in the Milky Way galaxy. Thus far, the discoveries have been remarkable. Astronomers have now found more than 4000 exoplanets in our galaxy and are constantly on the lookout for more.
This research opens new possibilities for us to explore the unknowns of the Universe. It is no exaggeration to assert that the search for exoplanets has revolutionized Astronomy and is creating a new path to discovering a wealth of new knowledge about planets outside of our Solar System.
