Source link Recently, scientists have reported exciting news about the ongoing exploration of our Solar System. According to ScienceDaily, the media site for science enthusiasts, the Solar System continues to grow with the discovery of four new major worlds and more than 100 small objects orbiting our sun in the outermost regions of the Solar System.
The most significant of these discoveries is the trans-Neptunian object that has been designated as [48695824] 2014 MU 69. This is the most distant body ever explored by a spacecraft and is located roughly a billion miles beyond Pluto. The spacecraft that made this discovery, referred to as the New Horizons, was launched by NASA in 2006, and it is considered a historic breakthrough in our exploration of the Solar System.
Another major discovery has been the confirmation of the existence of a large asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. This belt consists of roughly 3 million asteroids and is believed to be the remnants of our solar system’s formation billions of years ago.
The other two discoveries are considered “super-Earth” worlds, planets that are two to three times the mass of our own planet Earth. The significance of this is that they can potentially host life and are located relatively close to our own home world.
Overall, this proves that since the launch of New Horizons in 2006, our knowledge of the Solar System has greatly increased and continues to grow. New Horizons has provided a breakthrough in our understanding of the Solar System, showing us that it continues to surprise and expand with the discovery of new and exciting worlds.
