The film follows Lorraine through her struggles, as she encounters bullies and loneliness, as well as the a dire financial position that makes it difficult for her family to receive the basic necessities and amenities for living. Her experience of living on the street, leads her to contemplate both the depths of the human spirit in terms of perseverance, but also the joy and comfort found in the companionship of the most improbable of friends; the three kittens she found during her time of need.
The film, directed by Catriona McKenzie, brims with an excellent cast, with Kate Box in the role of Lorraine, and Luke Mullins and Charlize Champagne as her parents. Despite the bleak subject at hand, it is truly a testament to the power of film and its ability to express emotion and joy, through the hard times and the good.
The film both entertains and educates, as it successfully highlights the importance of family, friendship and compassion as a means to combat poverty. The film is also set against the melancholic, yet beautiful backdrop of suburban Sydney, providing a strong atmosphere and mood of solitude and peace.
Watch The Strays is a film with a unique voice, one which undoubtedly makes the most of its message. It is both captivating and heartbreaking, and despite being a relatively low-budget production, Watch The Strays stays true to its title, keeping audiences on the edge of their seats through its intense narrative, believable performances and stunning cinematography.
